How can we use data science to empower cyclists, help bicycle retailers, and provide the industry with direction?

In this seminar, certified bike nerds Dan Stroud and Zach Hale of Bike Insights share their research on bike design and cycling trends using data visualization. Bike Insights combines bike geometry data with crowdsourced feedback from the cycling community to answer questions such as:

• How is it possible to do online matchmaking between cyclists and bikes?
• What bike designs and categories are trending, and why?
• How do cyclists feel about their bike fit?
• How can we develop a common language to talk about bike design?
• How can the industry improve the way bike geometry is conveyed?
• How can rider feedback be used to design better bikes?
• How can the industry better serve a more diverse demographic?

Brenda Hernandez-Torres, Randy LoBasso and Leonard Bonarek will be presenting “Advocate Training: Becoming a Champion for Cyclists in Your Neighborhood & Region” at the 2019 Philly Bike Expo. The group discussion will provide participants a recounting of local victories and a toolkit for how to get more involved in civic engagement and community leadership around bike advocacy, and the Dos and Don’ts of fighting for safer streets. 

We will also answer any questions people may have about getting involved in their community, or with the greater Philadelphia cycling community.

Travel enriches our lives. For most people, traveling involves breaking away and coming back. We take vacations, then come “home” until we can go out for the next holiday.
Have you ever dreamed of your “normal life” being on your bicycle? Based on a four-year experiment living on a bicycle (https://freewheelingfreelancer.com/), this presentation provides basic principles and tips for deciding whether the life of the digital nomad (who burns the bridges) or the location-independent worker (who keeps a base somewhere) is right for you. We will discuss communications, types of work that travel, keeping healthy, budgeting, managing the business, etc. and answer questions about working abroad.
This is not bicycle touring, and it is not for everyone, but it is an achievable dream for many. Only the backpacker has more serious space and weight issues than the cyclist; the lessons from this presentation can be scaled up to other ways to travel.
If you have ever wondered about being able to live on the road, this presentation should be helpful – whether your ticket is one-way or round-trip.
